How to Give Yourself a Facial Massage

Updated: Feb 27

BeautyDel is about to let you in on a little secret. One of the most effective ways to attain a healthy and glowing complexion is through facial massage. We realize that regular facial massages might seem like an unnecessary luxury, and added expense, or simply “extra.” However, in this article we will break down the benefits that a well-executed face massage can offer and the steps on how to do it for yourself in the comfort of your home!

The benefits of a facial massage include:

  • Releasing muscle stiffness and tension.

  • Increasing micro-circulation which boosts skin healing, repair, and rejuvenation.

  • Toning facial muscle and tightening skin.

  • Stimulating collagen production which reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Improving lymphatic drainage and reducing fluid build-up.

  • Lessening puffiness, acne, and inflammation.

  • Enhancing the effectiveness of serums and moisturizers.

Now that you’ve heard all the positive outcomes of regular facial massages, BeautyDel has compiled some techniques and instructions to keep in mind when giving yourself a facial massage.

Before you get started, it is important that you first clean your face and hands, removing any excess oils and bacteria from our skin. Once you have cleansed your skin, add a small amount of serum, oil, or cleansing balm to your hands. Spreading this around your fingers and palm before starting your facial massage will allow your hands to easily glide over your skin.

The key to a good facial massage is to be gentle on with your skin, while applying firm pressure. Whether you have 5 minutes or an hour, the beauty of giving yourself a facial massage is that you can tailor the experience to your own preferences and routine. For example, we recommend playing some relaxing music in the background or lighting a candle to stimulate some of your other senses.

Techniques for giving yourself a facial massage:

  • Rub your fingers into your temples using a circular motion.

  • Use your palms and fingertips to massage the sides of your face, starting at your chin and moving upwards to your forehead, then slide your hands back down to your chin.

  • Press and glide your ring fingers into your brow bones, moving from the inner to the outer corners. Repeat the same movement underneath your eyes.

  • Using your thumb and index finger of both hands, starting at the outer corners of your eyebrows, gently pinch your eyebrows as you move to the inner corner and back.

  • Press your fingers into the center of your brows. Slowly glide them up towards your hairline and then outwards toward your temples. Repeat this motion.

  • Press down firmly on the space between your eyebrows for a few seconds. Then continue pressing as you make small clockwise and counterclockwise movements.

  • Using your index and middle fingers, press underneath your cheekbones close to your nose. Starting at the center of your face, move your fingers outwards and upwards toward your temples.

  • Start at your nose and move your fingers outwards across your cheeks all the way to your ears.

  • Use your thumb and first two fingers to pinch the skin on your chin. Continue to pinch the skin as you move toward your ears.

  • Press into your jaw with your thumbs as you move from the outside of your jaw below your ears towards your chin.

  • With your index finger, use a circular motion to massage the area under and behind your earlobes. Also, use your index finger and thumb to massage your earlobes.

  • Use the outside of your pinky fingers to press into your neck, starting just under your jaw and moving downward toward your collar bones.

  • Gently tap your fingertips over all areas of your face to conclude your massage.

Note 1: Repeat each technique or movement 5 times or focus on a specific area for 20 to 30 seconds.

Note 2: For a stronger effect, use your knuckles to press into your facial muscles and tissue when conducting your own massage.
